Some Jaguar History
Jaguar - Born to Perform
Jaguar began in 1922 as the Swallow Sidecar Company, founded by Sir William Lyons and William Walmsley. William Lyons conceived the Jaguar logo in 1922, based on his original vision to design motorcycle sidecars. This changed in 1926, when automobile body manufacturing initiated, producing attractive and luxurious sedans built with Jaguar auto parts. After Walmsley left the company in 1934, Lyons resurrected the Jaguar name in 1935 with the SS90 and SS100 sports models, featuring Jaguar auto parts. After WW II ended in 1945, the company too was given the Jaguar name; however, cash was short and Jaguar was sold to Rubery Owen, a British engineering company that manufactured pressed steel motor panels. Jaguar and Jaguar auto parts would later recapture some of the momentum it lost as a result of WW II. After the war, Jaguar purchased a manufacturing plant from Standard Motor Company who had provided the six-cylinder engines included in Jaguar automobiles. At the 1948 Motor Show, Jaguar introduced the XK120, with an unprecedented 160 hp engine, powered by Jaguar auto parts. In 1953, Jaguar partnered with Dunlop to revolutionize racing and safety with the disc brake, highlighting innovation in Jaguar auto parts. Jaguar won the Le Mans 24 Hour race in 1956 and 1957.
Jaguar Survives a Rocky Half Century
Jaguar leased what would become its principal plant from the Daimler Motor Company in 1951, to manufacture Jaguar auto parts. It would later purchase Daimler from Birmingham Small Arms Company in 1960. During the 1960s, Jaguar implemented the Daimler name on its most luxurious models. More consolidation of Jaguar auto parts occurred in 1966, as Jaguar merged with British Motor Corporation (BMC) and Austin-Morris to form British Motor Holdings. Two years later, BMC changed its name to British Leyland Motor Corporation (BLMC). In 1975, the famous "Ryder Report", sanctioned by Great Britain's government, identified BLMC and Jaguar auto parts as having great potential. However,, BLMC was in poor financial condition, and Jaguar auto parts indeed struggled to survive. The government accepted the reports recommendation to issue a 1,264 million pound capital expenditure and implement organizational changes to the management structure. Together, these measures effectively led to the nationalization of the company and survival of Jaguar auto parts. This action saved Jaguar as it was spun off as a separate company on the stock market in 1984. The Ford Motor Company acquired all outstanding stock shares and Jaguar auto parts in 1989. Three months later, Jaguar's listing on the London Stock Exchange vanished; however, Jaguar auto parts continued to exist. After nineteen years of ownership with no profit, Ford sold Jaguar to TaTa Motors, citing concerns with labor, technology and intellectual property. A three billion dollar loan to finance the deal was brokered by Citigroup and JP Morgan. Like a cat with nine lives, Jaguar and Jaguar auto parts survived another episode of stagnation. Today, Jaguar is rebounding with the XJ (X351), XKR and XF models. The Jaguar name and trademark hood ornament continue to represent luxury, class and sport.
